Mountain Manager

Hatcher Alpine Xperience (HAX) is a 501c(3) non-profit organization that manages Skeetawk; a new alpine recreation facility in Hatcher Pass (Palmer) Alaska.

 

HAX is seeking a versatile, creative and experienced Mountain Manager. The Mountain Manager ensures the organization meets industry standards and best practices for ski areas and provides management of on mountain activities.

 

Duties and responsibilities include oversight of, planning for and executing daily operations, general maintenance activities, and development/implementation of the Board of Director’s long term plan for Skeetawk. The Mountain Manager is expected to develop and implement maintenance programs to ensure equipment maintenance requirements are identified, documented and implemented to industry standards.

 

The Mountain Manager works with employees, contractors, and volunteers with direct responsibility for hiring, training, and supervising mountain operations staff. The applicant has a critical eye for detail and promotes a high-quality guest experience. The applicant is a team builder willing to “get into the trenches” and work across departments to meet visitor and employee requirements. Leading by example is the applicant’s mantra.

 

The applicant works advises the BOD on ski area operations to provide assistance for long-term vision and planning . Attendance at board meetings and Skeetawk functions is mandatory as the applicants’ input is a valued piece of the Boards decision making process. Various Board committees may require technical or other input which is expected by the applicant to ensure committee success.

 

The applicant understands and manages industry standard insurance requirements relevant to current risk. The applicant manages the day-to-day insurance portfolio interfacing with the insurance company representative. Insurance audits are conducted by insurance company underwriters regularly and are the responsibility of the applicant as well.

 

Reports to: Board of Directors Executive Committee (a specific committee member is assigned as a single point of contact.)

Required Qualifications:

● Minimum 10+ years of experience in a ski industry leadership or supervisory role.

● Ability to supervise, operate, and maintain all aspects of Lift Operations and Maintenance Programs including Level II Lift Technician Responsibilities.

● Full knowledge of ASNI B77 standards, state skier statutes, and skier safety acts.

● Experience supervising various departments including; grooming/ trails, ski patrol, lift operations, and area wide maintenance.

● Ability to coordinate day to day operations and supervise staff in multiple departments.

● Experience with project management and facilities maintenance.

● Effective written and verbal communicator with problem solving ability and conflict resolution skills.

● A spirit of collaboration, a sense of humor, and a passion for our organizational values

● Available to work weekends, holidays, and some evenings.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience with ski area risk management including ski patrol, terrain parks, accident investigation, and industry insurance programs. •

Experience with lift, vehicle maintenance and grooming operations.

• Heavy equipment operator experience.

• Construction experience including; biking/ hiking trail building, general carpentry, welding/ fabrication, and general electrical.

 

POSITION DETAILS: This is a full-time salaried management level position. Flexible work plans are available in summer and fall; and candidate must work weekends and holiday breaks during ski season (November 15-April 30). Rate of Pay: Starting Salary of $50,000+ per year based on experience. Benefits: Accrued paid time off after one year probationary period. Matching IRA contributions.

Job Title: Lead Lift Operator & Technician

 

Hatcher Alpine Xperience is a 501c(3) tax-exempt organization developing Skeetawk; a new alpine ski, snowboard, and recreation facility in Hatcher Pass (Palmer) Alaska. We are hiring for Lead Lift Operators and Technicians to help supervise daily operations of our triple chair lift. This role will serve as a Lead Lift Operator and supervise lift attendants. Lead Operators will also train as a Level 1 Lift Technician to perform routine maintenance, safety checks, trouble shoot lift mechanical systems, electrical systems, and insure the safe maintenance and operation of the chairlift.

 

Required Qualifications:

  • Previous experience operating ski area tramways, chair lifts, or equivalent passenger conveyance equipment. 

  • Knowledge of lift operations best practices, ANSI b77 code, and troubleshooting mechanical & electrical systems. 

  • Intermediate to advanced skiing or snowboarding experience. 

  • Experience and comfort working at heights up to 40’. 

  • Ability to work outdoors in cold climates for extended periods of time. 

  • Ability to maintain focus on guest safety during hectic and busy operating periods. 

 

Preferred Qualifications:

 

  • Previous experience as a lift maintenance technician, or a strong mechanical background and a desire to learn. Training can be provided to the right applicant. 

  • NSAA/PNSAA Level 1 (or higher) Lift Technician Training and Certification

  • Experience or training with lift evacuation, climbing, or rope access work. 

  • Experience with both low and high voltage electrical control systems. 

  • Experience training lift operators, attendants, and other mountain operations staff. 

 

POSITION DETAILS:

 

This position will be responsible for daily inspections, documentation, and the safe operation of the ski lift. Lift operators monitor control panels, prepare loading and unloading areas, construct lift mazes, and interact with guest to promote a safe and enjoyable skiing experience. 

 

Lift Technicians perform diagnostics, preventative maintenance, and remedy mechanical issues that can be addressed with onsite resources and equipment. 

 

This is a part time seasonal position with an average of 24-30 hours per week during the operating season. More hours may be required during extended operations on school holidays.. 

 

This position will begin with scheduled training and maintenance dates in October, with regularly scheduled hours increasing in December. A commitment is required through April. Work shifts will be Friday, Saturday, and Sunday for up to 9 hour shifts.  

 

Rate of Pay: $16.00+ hourly.

Job Title: Lift Operator -OR- Attendant

 

Hatcher Alpine Xperience is a 501c(3) tax-exempt organization developing Skeetawk; a new alpine ski, snowboard, and recreation facility in Hatcher Pass (Palmer) Alaska. We are hiring  Lift Operators and Attendants to conduct daily operations of our triple chair lift. This role may serve as the primary lift operator or an entry level attendant. Lift Operator will train to perform guest services, routine maintenance, safety checks, daily paperwork, and insure the safe  operation of the chairlift. Entry level staff will function as a lift attendant and assist guest with loading the chairlift and support the role of the lift operator. Opportunities for training and advancement to an Operator role will exist. 

 

Required Qualifications:

 

  • Intermediate to advanced skiing or snowboarding experience. 

  • Ability to work outdoors in cold climates for extended periods of time. 

  • Ability to maintain focus on guest safety during hectic and busy operating periods. 

  • Ability to follow instructions and re-create daily set up procedures with minimal supervision. 

  • Reliable 4wd or AWD vehicle required. 

 

Preferred Qualifications:

 

  • 1+ year of experience operating ski area tramways, chair lifts, or equivalent passenger conveyance equipment.  

  • Experience assisting with lift evacuation, climbing, or rope access work. 

 

POSITION DETAILS:

 

This position will be responsible for daily inspections, set-up, documentation, and the safe operation of the ski lift. 

 

  • Lift operators monitor control panels, prepare loading and unloading areas, construct lift mazes, and interact with guest to promote a safe and enjoyable skiing experience. 

 

  • Lift attendants work closely with our guests to assist in the loading of the chairlift, checking of tickets, and providing area information. 

 

Lift Operator will work closely with lift attendants, ski patrol, and guest services to assist in other ski area duties. Lift Technicians perform diagnostics, preventative maintenance, and remedy mechanical issues that can be addressed with on site resources and equipment. 

 

This is a part time seasonal position with an average of 10-16 hours per week during the operating season. Less hours may be available during other times. Training starts in November with hours increasing in December.

Job Title: Guest Services Yurt Staff

 

Hatcher Alpine Xperience is a 501c(3) tax-exempt organization developing Skeetawk; a new alpine ski, snowboard, and recreation facility in Hatcher Pass (Palmer) Alaska. We are hiring Guest Services and Yurt Staff to conduct daily guest service operations including:

 

  • Ticket, Pass, Membership, and Merchandise Sales

  • Customer Service and Visitor Information

  • Reservations

  • Snack Bar and Food and Beverage Sales

  • Cleaning, Maintenance, and daily sanitation of the Yurt and associated facilities. This includes assisting with snow removal and parking lot duties. 

 

Guest Services Yurt Staff will work both indoors and out to meet the needs of our guest. Yurt staff will mostly perform inside customer service duties, but will also be tasked with outdoor ticket checking, base area, parking, and visitor information tasks. Yurt staff may assist operations crews with parking area set up and assist with parking attendant duties as needed. 

 

Required Qualifications:

 

  • Ability to maintain focus on good customer service and guest safety during hectic and busy operating periods. 

  • Ability to follow instructions and re-create daily opening, closing, and set up procedures with minimal supervision. 

  • Ability to responsibly manage; sales transactions, cash handling, and till accounting. Experience with point sale and computer systems is required.

  • Ability to work safely outdoors in cold climates for short periods of time. 

 

Preferred Qualifications:

 

  • 1+ year of experience in ski area ticket sales, ski school, sporting goods, food and beverage, or general customer service industry employment. 

  • Previous experience with the setup of points of sale systems, customer record keeping, and computer systems in preferred.

Job Title: Ski/ Snowboard Equipment Rental Technician

 

Hatcher Alpine Xperience is a 501c(3) tax-exempt organization developing Skeetawk; a new alpine ski, snowboard, and recreation facility in Hatcher Pass (Palmer) Alaska. We are experienced and entry level 


 

Rental Shop Staff will work both indoors and out to meet the needs of our guest. Shop staff will mostly perform inside customer service and ski/ board technician duties, but may also be tasked with outdoor ticket checking, base area, parking, and visitor information tasks. Yurt staff may assist operations crews with snow removal, parking area set up, and assist with base area duties as needed. 

 

Required Qualifications:

 

  • Ability to maintain focus on good customer service and guest safety during hectic and busy operating periods. 

  • Ability to follow instructions and re-create daily opening, closing, and set up procedures with minimal supervision. 

  • Ability to responsibly manage; sales transactions, cash handling, and till accounting. Experience with point sale and computer systems is required.

  • Staff must ensure proper record keeping of waivers and liability releases. 

  • Must be able to be trained for proper sizing of ski/ board equipment, binding testing equipment, and tuning of skis and snowboards.  

 

Preferred Qualifications:

 

  • 1+ year of experience as ski shop technician, ski school, sporting goods, food and beverage, or general customer service industry employment. 

  • Previous experience with binding testing equipment & ski tuning equipment is preferred.

Job Title: Ski or Snowboard Instructor

 

Hatcher Alpine Xperience is a 501c(3) tax-exempt organization developing Skeetawk; a new alpine ski, snowboard, and recreation facility in Hatcher Pass (Palmer) Alaska. 

 

Qualifications:

 

  • Level 1 or higher PSIA/AASI Certification, or equivalent.

  • Excellent customer service, interpersonal and verbal communication skills.

  • At least 1 year prior Ski/Snowboard instructing experience.

  • Able to Ski/SB for extended periods of time, requiring lifting, bending and twisting

  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including weekends and holidays.

  • Excellent customer service, interpersonal and verbal communication skills.

  • Ability to work outdoors in cold climates for extended periods of time. 

  • Minimum of Intermediate Skiing and or Snowboarding skills.

 

POSITION DETAILS:

  • Teach group and private lessons to guests of all ages, backgrounds and abilities.

  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Ski and Ride School Director, including terrain park operations, rental shop tasks, snow removal, and other duties as assigned

  • Instructors must be physically able to safely navigate all in-bounds areas in all weather and snow conditions.  You will be required to ski/snowboard and talk for extended periods of time.  Lifting heavy objects (no more than 50 pounds), bending, twisting and shoveling may be required.  You will be required to stand and walk safely on uneven terrain. 

 

This is a part time seasonal position with an average of 10 hours per week during the operating season. Less hours may be available during other times. 

 

This position will begin part time with scheduled training dates in November, with regularly scheduled hours increasing in December. A commitment is required through April. Work shifts will be some Fridays, and every Saturday and Sunday, for up to 6 hour shifts. Workdays and times are not flexible and will require additional workload on all school holiday and break periods. 

 

Rate of Pay: Pay varies by level of certification and experience 

Instructor Pay Scale

No experience/limited experience $12 per hour

Prior experience or Lapsed Certification $14 per hour

Level 1 PSIA/AASI $16 per hour

Level 2 PSIA/AASI $18 per hour

Level 3 PISA/AASI $20 per hour

Job Title: Professional Ski Patroller and Operations Assistants

 

Hatcher Alpine Xperience is a 501c(3) tax-exempt organization developing Skeetawk; a new alpine ski, snowboard, and recreation facility in Hatcher Pass (Palmer) Alaska. We are hiring a professional ski patrol and operations assistant to assist with the following:

  • Patrol ski trails and slope areas to provide assistance and protection to skiers and report condition of trails, ski lifts, and snow cover on slopes.

  • Treat injured guest and safely transport patients off the hill by toboggan. 

  • Assist with lift operations, conduct lift evacuations, and assist with staff training.

  • Assist Mountain Operations staff with opening and closing procedures, staff training, dispatch duties, and record keeping.

Required Qualifications:

 

  • 1-3+ year of experience as a paid OR volunteer ski patroller. 

  • Current OEC, EMT, or WFR certification.

  • Advanced Skiing Ability

  • Experience in assisting or conducting lift evacuations. 

 

Preferred Qualifications:

 

  • Advanced certifications in: EMS, Search and Rescue, avalanche rescue, rope access work, and industry workplace safety programs.

  • Prior Experience transporting patients in patrol toboggans.

  • Experience operating over the snow vehicles including: snow machines and grooming equipment. 

 

POSITION DETAILS:

  • Enforce safe skiing practices according to the State of Alaska & Skeetawk Safety programs and policies.

  • Possess full knowledge and understanding of policies and procedures as outlined in the Ski Area Operations & Safety Plan.

  • Performs radio dispatch, record keeping, maintain volunteer and employee rosters, sign ins, and assist with staff scheduling. 

This is a part time seasonal position with an average of 16-20 hours per week during the operating season. Less hours may be available during other times.

Job Title: Groomer Operator & Vehicle Maintenance Technician

 

Hatcher Alpine Xperience is a 501c(3) tax-exempt organization developing Skeetawk; a new alpine ski, snowboard, and recreation facility in Hatcher Pass (Palmer) Alaska. 

 

We are hiring a Grooming Operator and Maintenance Technician to manage daily operations of our winter trail grooming and terrain park programs. 

 

Required Qualifications:

  • 1-3+ years of experience operating snow grooming equipment.

  • Knowledge of heavy equipment, diesel engines, and troubleshooting mechanical systems. 

  • Intermediate to advanced skiing or snowboarding experience. 

  • Ability to work outdoors in cold climates for extended periods of time. 

  • Ability to maintain focus on safety during hectic and busy operating periods. 

 

Preferred Qualifications:

 

  • Experience in Ski Area Terrain Park Grooming and Maintenance

 

POSITION DETAILS:

 

This position will be responsible for daily inspections, documentation, preventative maintenance, repair, and the safe operation of the grooming equipment. 

 

Grooming Operator will work closely with lift attendants, ski patrol, and guest services to assist in other ski area duties. Grooming Maintenance Technicians perform diagnostics, preventative maintenance, and remedy mechanical issues that can be addressed with onsite resources and equipment. 

 

This position provides a great training opportunity for someone looking to advance into a ski area vehicle maintenance position. Opportunities may exist to cross train and operate ski lift equipment, snow removal equipment, and assist with area wide maintenance needs. 

 

This is a part time seasonal position with an average of 10 hours per week during the operating season. Less hours may be available during other times.
